Creativity Day

about

Creativity Day is a special day of musical learning and exploration for young musicians in New Orleans. Students are taught to collaborate with each other through chamber music, perform live on a stage, and create their own compositions.

why we do it

Creativity Day provides K–12 students with high-quality chamber music learning that builds confidence, technical skill, and artistic excellence. In partnership with schools and after-school music programs across New Orleans and Louisiana, students receive collaborative, hands-on instruction that most programs cannot provide on their own.

Creativity Day prepares students to participate in our chamber music competition, where they gain performance experience, professional recognition, and opportunities to earn scholarships for higher education.

By bringing students together across schools, Creativity Day creates opportunities to build new friendships, learn alongside peers from different programs, and explore music through workshops, labs, and masterclasses. Students also have the rare opportunity to work with world-renowned professional musicians and teaching artists, expanding their musical world and vision for their future.

what to know

Students are welcome to participate in Creativity Day either as part of an existing chamber group or as an individual musician. If you register as a solo player, we’ll place you in a new ensemble with other students. Together, you’ll create an original piece during our Composition Lab and perform it at the final concert at the end of the day.

If you’re already part of a chamber group, we invite you to bring a piece you’ve been rehearsing to perform and refine with our teaching artists. Existing ensembles will also participate in the Composition Lab alongside newly formed groups. We encourage each ensemble to prepare more than one piece, including one by an underrepresented composer, to broaden students’ musical experiences and celebrate diverse voices in classical music.
